SEALER
All carvings are dried and sealed with either a log oil or spar urethane. Feel free to reach out about your particular carving for resealing purposes. As far as when to re-seal your carving, it's going to vary based on where it is. Sun is the sealers biggest enemy, the more sun it gets, the more often it needs to be re-sealed. The best judge of when to do it is when it seems like it needs it. For log oil a carving should have a slight wet feel to the touch. If it feels extremely dried out, it's time for a coat. For urethane if the finish starts to look dull with no shine, it's time to recoat.
CRACKS
The drying process takes place after the carving is roughed out any cracks are then repaired before the detail process. This eliminates a good percentage of cracking on the customers end.
However, cracking does still happen and it is in no way a structural worry. Repairs can be done to make your carving look good as new. We offer one free repair if cracking is an issue. An ideal spot for a carving is outside on a shady porch, but that isn't ideal for everyone. Below are some reasons a carving would be more prone to crack. If you'd like to have a carving in an area more prone to cracking, our recommendation is to go ahead and put it there. If a crack does develop, let it fully acclimate to the environment and do the repair after the wood is done adjusting.
We will not refund your purchase due to cracks, unless we deem there was an issue with the wood itself. One free repair is offered and we recommend waiting 6-12 months for your carving to full acclimate to it's location before repairing.
